Lean Office & The Mainland Simulation

  • Discover a methodology for becoming more responsive & efficient

  • Eliminate costly waste from the office to increase customer responsiveness

  • Improve morale through better communication & understanding of work flow

  • Learn how to spend less time on review, inspection, rework & approval and...

  • ...more time satisfying your customer!

The Lean Office Workshop, featuring The Mainland Simulation provides a unique hands-on experience for participants to learn about Lean Office tools and methodologies. Playing the game reinforces the key principles of Lean Office, empowering participants to take the initiative and implement continuous and sometimes radical improvements in their workplace.
  • The Mainland Simulation

The game uses a "university admissions" process as the organisational setting. Players assume different roles including customer (applicant), admissions clerks, external reference, departmental tutors and accounts officer. The game is then played over a minimum of three rounds with the players processing ten complete applications each round. The scoreboard highlights key indicators such as 'time to complete', 'number of errors' and 'productivity'. Changes are made after each round, with subsequent measures and discussion.
    Key Concepts

    Participants will:

  • Experience a fast track and hands-on journey from traditional to best practices

  • Learn how to identify danger signs, implement change and break down misconceptions

  • Form a cohesive group with shared experience of improvement and business concepts

As a result of playing the game, participants will be familiar with the principles (as defined by Hammer) of Business Process Re-design, including:

  • Organise around outcomes, not tasks

  • Have those who use the output of the process perform the process

  • Subsume information processing work into the real work that produces the process

  • Treat geographically dispersed resources as though they were centralised

  • Link parallel activities instead of integrating their results

  • Put the decision point where the work is performed, and build control into the process

  • Capture information once and at the source
  • Mainland Scoreboard
